Playing Bridgetown town hall over the Festival weekend
Yes we will be playing in Bridgetown over the Festival weekend. Stumptown will play in the Bridgetown Town Hall opposite the Freemasons Hotel on Saturday afternoon. This year the Blues Festival will be a much smaller affair but there is plenty of music happening in and around the town over the weekend This will be our opportunity to support the Festival and the township, both hit hard by the Covid fallout. Stumptown will be injecting a big component of raw blues into the event countering criticism that there just aren’t enough blues bands on show.
Hot off the press
There is a very limited run of CDs available so you will need to be in quick. The session at James Newhouse Studios has produced a rip roaring sound and we all love it. Not at all polished or crafted this is a string of performances akin to our onstage show; raw, passionate and with Stumptown’s big heavy beat. If you can’t get to a show or just want a keepsake then grab one before they disappear. Email us and we will arrange to get a copy to you.
Bunbury is ready for a big night of blues
Way back in 2017 we met Matty T Wall during a South West Blues Club event at the Parade Hotel. Matty was playing as part of a special summer blues festival hosted by the club. Matty had just released his album Blue Eyes that became one of the top 10 blues albums in the world. He is an extraordinary guitarist and showman. Dynamic, gutsy and mesmerising, his big sound comes courtesy of two other reputable names in music, Ric Whittle and Leigh Miller. So it was a real privilege to have Matty ask Stumptown to join him on Friday 18 September for a big night of blues at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Bunbury. Matty is a South West Blues club member, so this will be a big night for club members. Many venues have been slow to return to live music since the pandemic and this show will well and truly break the drought. Three blues bands on stage comprising a big contingency of Blues Club members. So get on down to the Prince and let’s celebrate just some of the extraordinary talent in our town and in our club. It will be a great night of blues.
The CD is out
We haven’t been sitting on our hands over the lock-down. When restrictions allowed we went back playing together and compiling more material for our first CD. Under the direction of James Newhouse at Lamb Chop Studios in Gelorup we crammed ten of our best onto a disc. We had just a day with James but it was a new and a great experience. This is album consists of ‘one take wonders’, the sound and feel is of a stage performance, you get it as it came out, no serious reworking just raw passionate blues. Once the final mix was complete we had a very limited run of CDs produced at DiscBank in Perth. Our thanks to Aidan for a sterling effort getting these out.
We urge you to grab a copy, take it home, clear the lounge room, stick the CD into your sound system and crank up the volume. You may not be able to make it to a live venue but this really is the next best thing.
If you would like a copy simply email us at email@example.com and we can arrange to get a copy to you. CD’s are $20 plus postage.
Playing to the Perth faithful
To be invited to play as the main act at the Perth Blues Club was a huge honour. Our set up and sound check was at 6.30pm and we had Jay one of the best sound guys in WA, get everything mic’ed up. An 8.30pm start, after the opening act, had us in front of very attentive audience and while not a full house, it was a very appreciative crowd. After just a few songs the dance floor had filled out. We were fortunate to have a good group of friends and Harmonica Club members at the event, so it was great to catch up after the dust had settled.
Our thanks to the PBC for putting us up, we had a lot of great feedback. We are looking forward to playing at this historic venue again.
An invitation to play at Perth Blues Club
As members of the South West Blues Club we have always had an unofficial affiliation with other Blues and Music clubs. It has been a privileged to play twice at the West Coast Blues Club and now an invitation to play at WA’s oldest and premier club; the Perth Blues Club, at the iconic Charles Hotel is an incredible honour. This club has hosted an incredible line up of national and international bands and musicians over a good number of years. The club boasts a great stage set up, lighting and sound. We look forward, with a great amount of anticipation, to play to an audience of blues enthusiasts in the New Year.
Hitting our Stride
When asked to play for the participants in the Relay for Life fund raiser in Bunbury this year, we all jumped at it. This annual event is an important fund raiser for the Cancer Council and we were happy to donate our talents for this worthwhile cause. The band kicked off the day on an impressive stage set up by Totally Sound and we would like to thank Derek for his great desk skills. As the ribbon was cut to start the mammoth walk, Stumptown delivered some good old ‘blood pumping’ blues, as the throngs set off on their first lap. We have been invited back next year as a night act and we are already looking forward to that.
Rod McCosker Joins the Band
It is with great pleasure that we announce that Rod McCosker has joined Stumptown as drummer. Rod and his charming wife Lee have supported the band right from the outset and Rod has filled in for Michael on a number of occasions at Blues Club events. So when it became evident that Michael was not going to be able to continue as our drummer Rod slotted in almost as if he had been with us all along. Rod’s drumming style is a natural fit, as is his long term band experience. We believe we are in a solid position to now take on what looks to be a busy time ahead.
A night with Roy Payne
We first met Roy Payne when he toured WA as lead guitarist with the talented blues vocalist Toni Swain in March 2018. This time he was back in the West on his own armed only with his awesome twin neck guitar and accordion. Before he started his Perth tour he came back down to Bunbury where he was special guest with Stumptown at the Parade Hotel. He is an accomplished guitarist and lapped up the guitar breaks with Ron before he picked up his accordion and fired into a set of original foot stomping Zydeco numbers.
Stumptown Wins Battle of the Bands
Busselton’s Ship Inn is rapidly garnishing a reputation as a major music venue in the South West. It moved another step forward on Saturday the 31st of August, holding the area’s first Battle of the Bands competition. Six local bands went head to head at the iconic corner tavern; The Doozys, Midnight Sun, Mongrella, Stumptown, Sonatay, Missed the Boat and Negative Appeal played three numbers each. A good crowd gathered to support all the bands. In the end Stumptown triumphed and took away the spoils of a six month residency contract with the establishment.
Playing for the Flower People
An invitation to play at the Nannup Hotel by the organisers of the Nannup Garden and Flower Festival in June was a great chance to visit one of the more picturesque South West towns. The weather threatened on the Friday afternoon so we were glad to have scored a covered stage with room for onlookers. The crowd was more quality than quantity but we had a great time with an enthusiastic gathering that included the star of the show, Costa Georgiadis.
Afroblonde to partner with Stumptown
Hound Dog Dave’s iconic Afroblonde hat was the start of a new friendship and now partnership with Afroblonde. Ricardo Neves is the Brazilian born entrepreneur and founder of this incredible Australian enterprise. All of the firms products are made from recycled truck canvas and it is that look that the band fell in love with. All of the bands travel kit will be made by Afroblonde, the gear-bags, hats and footwear are all supplied by the business. “I love music and the Stumptown sound, says Ricardo. When these boys said they wanted to promote my gear I thought, WOW this is a chance to do something new and different with our band. I know they are going to be great ambassadors for us.” You can see the Afroblonde range at: https://www.afroblonde.com.au
